Berhana Jone's first draft

Halley and her family have just moved to Miami, Florida. Her father received a job promotion which
required the family to relocate from San Francisco, California to Miami, Florida. As a result Halley had to
leave behind all of her old friends and move down south. This meant that Halley was going to have to
make new friends and Halley’s old friends promised to keep in touch with her. Making new friends
didn’t worry Halley in the least. She could make new friends in a heartbeat. When she had first arrived in
Miami her family had decided to settle down on Macdonald’s Ave. It was a quiet little street where they
moved into a medium – sized tan house. Halley was determined to get to know all of the children on her
street well. She had paraded down the street with that proud air of confidence she had always
possessed. The first day she arrived she skipped along joyfully her long blond hair swishing  behind her
her aqua blue eyes alert at any sight of children. Any she saw she gave them a big smile and waved and
watched them smile and wave back. In a few weeks she would become close friends with them. In the
meantime however she couldn’t help feeling nervous about this new school. Lots of questions were
swarming around in her head but she decided to forget about it. It would pass in time. And pass it did.
For the past week she had been preoccupied with going school – supply shopping with her mom, taking
her puppy out for walks, and wondering about her new teachers and classmates. It was the 29th of
August and school was to start the first of September. Before she knew it the first of September arrived
and that morning she was so excited she could hardly eat breakfast. In no time she was out the door
bidding her parents good – bye as she made her way down the hill across the school yard to Mc. Dolly’s
High School. The day before she toured the school with her parents and noticed that it was quite small
on the inside compared with how it looked on the outside. Everything looked new and well – structured
from her point of view. In a few weeks she would get to know her teachers and classmates well. At the
end of the day she knew the names of all of her teachers and classmates. At home she told her parents
all about her first day. In math class she told them there was a kid named Brian but everyone called him
“the nerd”. Her chem teachers name was Mr. Fitzgerald. It was a long day so Halley decided it was time
to wind down with a book.
